Angel Food Update

When I first wrote about Angel Food Ministries, I said that I thought the program (which provides people of any income with ~$65 of food for $30/month) was worth a try, even though some of the items had dairy. Aaaand...then I never signed up and I never tried it. Way to be a leader!

But now, I will be signing up to to try their food in April because Angel Food Ministries now offers an allergen-free box, which is free of the top eight allergens. The box of food is available for $25 at any Angel Food location. (I checked with our local director. She said that anything you see on the site is available at every location--even out here in the sticks!) You have to sign up and pay ahead of time and then pick up the food on a specific date. Check with your local host site to find out the dates.

Here is what the March allergen-free box included, according to the website:

"Processed to eliminate the eight top serious allergens: Peanuts, Soybeans, Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacea, Tree Nuts and Gluten (wheat, rye and barley).

1 lb. Coated Chicken Tenders

1 lb. Coated Breast Filet

1 lb. Coated Chicken Nuggets

1 lb. Coated Chicken Wings

1 lb. Coated Cubed Steak (Chicken Fried Steak)"

I'm not thrilled that all of the items are "coated" (With what?), but I'm willing to give it a go, especially as the prices of all of the dairy-free chicken nuggets we buy keep going up and up.

Have any of you tried Angel Food yet? What did you think?

  1. You got my attention- let me know how it goes. But I do wonder about the coating thing.

  2. I thought the same thing when I saw "coated". I was going to give them a try this month also, but was a little leery of the coating and when I added up how much I would spend on the regular box (subtracting out what we couldn't use), I felt like I could do just as well financially at Aldi's. So, I won't be trying this month, but am VERY INTERESTED to hear how it goes for you with the allergy-free box. Be sure to list the ingredients out for us! :)

  4. Oh Wow! I'd heard about this maybe 2 or 3 years ago from my aunt who uses it every month. She has 4 kids and it helps stretch the usual grocery budget. She said it's a big box of food, always different things.

I looked up the info back then, but was disappointed w/ the things they packed in there - offhand I could see 1/3 to 1/2 I already KNEW had dairy in them. So that's really, really cool they have an allergen-free box!!! I might have to re-visit the idea!

  5. I saw the "coated" too and was turned off. I'm very curious about what you think!! I'm considering it, but only if you give it 2 thumbs up. I'm just not real please with the processed "junk" in the other box. But Hubs just got a "BIG" pay decrease and I'm up for almost anything at this point.

  6. We did Angelfood Ministries in January. We decided not to get it again for now.

It was a lot of stuff and most of it was OK. We had a few issues with a few of the meats. I would like to see what you think though.

We just decided I could use that money towards groceries and get pretty close in $$ amount. I shop sales and use lots of coupons.

  8. :) We do the Angel Food thing and haul our Heathen selves to church once a month for pick up. I find this endlessly amusing.

I like it for a number of reasons: It keeps me out of the grocery store and therefore helps with budgeting. It forces me to be creative with what I make to ensure the usage of all the ingredients. (I find they are pretty heavy on the french fries, so last month I made an oh-my-heavens-to-DIE-for Baked Potato soup. Hello creativity!

I find that it is worth it. And I am in desperate LOVE with the Fruit and Veggie Box. Make sure you get one of those.

  10. If you try it and find out WHAT the foods are coated with, please let us know. I might give it a try if they are truly allergen-free for me. As expensive as chicken nuggets are at the health food store it would definitely be worth it price wise and I could get a break from making my own! :~) But, I'm a little skeptical of what the coating actually is.

  11. Here is the coating "Breaded with water, white rice, brown rice, modified
tapioca starch, flax seed, sugar, dextrose, salt, spices,
dehydrated garlic, spice extractives and oleoresin paprika.
Breading is pre-browned in Canola oil."

I got this box in March. My son loved the cubed steak and the nuggets. We have eating everything but the wings, not a big wings fan, oh you were not asking about hockey...lol.
I will probably get more boxes but it would be nice to be able to get just the kinds we like.
