Sweets for the Sweet

Wendy tells me that WalMart discontinued Sam's Choice semisweet chocolate chips. What the heck, WalMart??? The only affordable dairy-free chips most people can easily find, and you do away with them. I did find a new dairy-free baking chocolate on sale at our grocery store, though: Scharffen Berger Semisweet and Bittersweet Baking Chunks.

And, our grocery is finally carrying So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt. Dairy and soy free! (A lump of coal to YOU, O'Soy, for adding DAIRY to soy yogurt.) Now Katherine can have yogurt again, and I can make the rest of the recipes in My Sweet Vegan.

If you're going shopping at Marshalls, look for bags of Guylian Solitaires. They are delicious dairy-free dark chocolates, and Marshalls usually carries them around the holidays.

OK, this is NOT dairy free, it is dairy full, but if you are near a Le Gourmet Chef and you can eat dairy, go buy some of this Peppermint Candy Cane Dip and spread it on brownies. Or chocolate cake. Or dip chocolate graham crackers in it.

  1. I'm not sure what constitutes a good price for choc chips, since I am guessing prices could vary across the country, but I buy Trader Joe's semi-sweet chips (used to be $1.69 a package, just went up to $1.99 a package!), and just found Whole Foods semi-sweet chips for $1.99 a package, 365 brand. They say "contains milk," but there isn't any milk in the ingredients. I think they are covering their backsides with this when it is actually a cross-contamination issue. Both brands would be a no go for those with severe milk allergies though, as they are made on shared equipment with milk chocolate.

Fresh & Easy is selling a "safe" bar of Scharfenberger - it is a over 1 lb of dark chocolate for just $1.99 right now! I loaded up :)

  2. I am going to be on the lookout for Scharffen Berger chips now! My sister-in-law says S.B. chocolate is TER BEST.

  3. Glad you are finding things Katherine can eat even if other brands are being crazy and adding milk!

  4. I was upset to not find Walmart's chips on the shelves anymore! Although, I have found that the Kroger brand semi-sweet choco chips are DF. Right now they are $1.30 a bag at my store. (I've been making lots of cookies!) :)

I'll have to swing by Marshall's and check the others out!

    Thanks for the heads up!

  5. Yeah, we found out about the O'Soy containing dairy the hard way. Seriously, I didn't even check the label because it is "soy yogurt." Bah!

  6. That's good to know about the kroger chips. I don't have one near me, but my grandparents do. I'll have to get them to mail me some:) I tried that yogurt with Lani and she said...."that's bewwy yucky"! LOL!! She's 2, so I had to put it in toddler language.

  8. I'll have to see if I can find the O'Soy coconut milk yogurt. Sounds like it'll be good.

I don't think I've ever seen the O'Soy soy yogurt. That doesn't stop me from being mad they put dairy in it. Or furious with companies who manufacture any dairy-free products (like most soy milk) on shared equipment with dairy.

  9. We also learned about the dairy in O'Soy the hard way. I had carefully checked over the label numerous purchses in a row and this particular one I didn't. I couldn't figure out WHY my daughter was so ill until I looked at the yogurt container on the counter and there it was -- "contains milk". I was so angry at them for changing it!! Luckily I just bought a yogurt maker.

  10. O'Soy added dairy? What fools. Good think we don't use that brand. The candy cane dips looks intriguing.

  11. I recently saw the dairy label on o soy too....did they REALLY have to do that? SO misleading...

Do you use Enjoy Life Chips? Because of our multiple allergies I use those exclusively.

Thanks for sharing this great info!

  12. Isn't the whole POINT of soy yogurt is that it has no dairy? REALLY.

  13. Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips are dairy free. (gold bag with blue label) The semi-sweet chocolate BAR, however, has dairy.

    Thanks for the great tips!

  14. I don't know if you have one in your area, but Trader Joe's makes non-dairy semi sweet chocolate chips that are very tasty and work well in baking.
