Props for Teacher

For the second year in a row, Katherine's class has collected the most box tops for the PTO. (No thanks to me.) Last year, they won a popcorn party, so I sent in a bag of dairy-free microwave popcorn for her to eat. This year, they won a pizza party. *Sigh*

Before I could figure out a plan B (like sending in a piece of cold dairy-free pizza), Katherine's teacher phoned me to see what we could work out.

Teacher: Is there a place in town that makes pizza that's safe for Katherine?

Me: Yes, it's [Pizza Place] and she can eat their regular pizza with no cheese. They're the only place in town that has never messed up our order.

Teacher: Well, they're going to be getting a lot more business from the school because of it.
[PTO Lady] said she was going to order all the pizzas with cheese and my student could just pick it off, but I told her that wouldn't work. I said I would call you to see what we could work out.

Me: Thank you for being so vigilant!

Teacher: Sure. Now I'm going to call [Mother of Student with Peanut Allergy] and make sure that pizza is safe for her, too.

You rock, Teacher!!!

  4. WOW!! What a great teacher!! She needs an "Allergy Teacher of the Year" award! :)

Do you feel more comfortable in sending Katherine to school now that she's in good hands? I think I would have a little more peace of mind, anyway.

    That teacher does rock!!!

  6. That is impressive!! It's great that you have someone on your side.

Bud really likes to bring his breakfast to school, and he has a really hard time understanding that he can not bring in his toast with peanut butter. I hate to deprive him, but at the same time, I don't feel like his preschool room has the allergy situation completely under control. I would hate to be the reason for a reaction, even if it was indirectly.

  8. How reassuring!!

The PTO lady still makes me want to shake some sense into her, but the teacher really seems to have done her homework and care!

I collect the box tops and labels for education diligently. Once or twice a year I clean out the junk drawer I've thrown them in and mail them out to little cousins attending school.

  10. Becky--It DOES make me feel better.

Saly--PB is a tricky one, for sure. It is banned in K's classroom because of her friend, N., but it hasn't been banned in the school as a whole--yet. Have you tried any other nut butters? K. doesn't like soy very much, but she'll eat some of the other ones.

  11. Wow! That's amazing. My kids' teachers are really great too. They even enlist me to read labels for other children's allergies just to make sure! By the way, don't know if you've heard of my store - The Allergy-Free Shop, in Miami, but I started an allergy friendly food market in my hometown because two of my kids have multiple food allergies (including dairy and peanuts). I just launched my online store too - www.allergyfreeshop.com and I'd love to put a link to your site on my website. Is that okay?

  15. Great teacher! The PTO lady needs at learn a bit about food allergies if she's going to be ordering food for children in school.

  16. That is so awesome! Wow, some people really get it, don't they?

I think I just read a requst for nut butters ... Trader Joe's (here's hoping you live near one!) raw almond butter is awesome and affordable. They have a non-raw one too that might appeal more to little ones. Their cashew butter is also really good and affordable. Obviously the nut butters cost more than PB, but at around $5, they seem to go quite a ways.

  17. Now THAT teacher deserves major Kudos. How cool is that?

Belle's class won the pizza party and they just had pizza, I sent in my own for her without cheese since she can do the rest.

Alex's class won the pizza party and his teacher said nope - she has 3 kids in the class with GFCF and other food allergies like soy, egg, nuts so I have no idea how we won it because we don't buy most of the food with boxtops but most of the kids have younger siblings so I think the Pull-ups did it!!! LOL. She had them do a party with a treasure chest and gifts from oriental trading, etc - crafts etc.

There IS one place here that does GF pizza but it is a good 30 minutes away so I usually just make my own.
