Five plus one

We're back from our travels, along with an addition to the family. No, I don't mean the Cuisinart I received as an anniversary present. (Thanks, Honey!)

Meet George, the guinea pig:

Please leave nice, supportive comments about how a pet will enrich my daughter's life, as I (unlike my husband) have never been a pet owner before. It's like a first pregnancy: I don't want to hear the bad stuff. Pet horror stories need not apply.

  1. Awww... how cute! I always wanted a guinea pig when I was a kid and never got to have one! I'm sure it will provide endless hours of entertainment for your kiddos.

  2. I'm sure the kids will love it. I got to "babysit" a hamster one time when I was about 12. I loved it.

We didn't have pets growing up either. My first was the dog we have now, when we adopted him 8 years ago.

I have been bugging Matt to get a fish for Zac, but he doesn't want to deal with them.

Good luck with George. And I love his name!

  3. Oh, it really is a good thing. We considered a guinea pig before we decided to go with rabbits. And my oldest son, who is 8, really pitches in to take care of them without being asked (!!!). He never completes any kind of 'chore' without being asked, frankly. But he is so responsible when it comes to the bunnies.

Another thing that helps is if you think of the pets as "yours". That way, if/when the kids lose interest and you have to do all the little chores, it doesn't matter. Because little Georgie is all yours!

  4. We are adopting a guinea pig this week from a 13-year old who fell out of love with her pet. Poor thing.... Anyway, my daughter is beside herself with anticipation and excitement. Pets are great!

MommyD: get a betta. They can live in a teeny-tiny bowl and are even sturdy enough to live through the "um...when was the last time you fed the fish?" moments. Or...at least OURS is!

  5. I had a guinea pig named Ginger as a youngster. She was fun. We all liked her.

  6. Pets are wonderful. We have a dog who is much loved by the whole family (but especially me...)

Guinea pigs are so cute and fluffy! I'm sure George will be a great addition!

  7. Aw - how cute. A guinea pig as your first guinea pig pet. :P

I'm sure it will be very low maintenance so long as your daughter stays on top of the cage cleaning. GOod choice!

  8. There hasn't been a day in my life I wasn't without a pet!

When I was younger, I had gerbils. I think small animals in cages is a good place to start. They're quiet, require little food and water, and are content in their little cage as long as you keep it clean!

I think it'll be fun and maybe you'll branch onto something bigger and messier and louder someday! ;)

  9. Misty, your rabbit post really got me thinking seriously about a pet besides fish, and now here we are.

  10. You have never had a pet!? Well, I hope you advance from guinea pigs to kittens ... definitely the animal of choice in our household.

My husband is allergic to cats, but that will never stop him, he looooves cats!

  14. He's so cute. I love guinea pigs. I had one once, but had to give him away b/c I'm allergic. Go figure - apparently if it has fur, I'm allergic. *sigh*
