What did you just call me?

Here's another recipe from that old cookbook of my mom's, How I Feed My Family on $16 a Week: brownies without chocolate called, um, "Whiteys." I told Scott that we should probably call them something else, but he insists we keep the original name.

1/3 cup vegetable shortening
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/3 cup raisins (I leave out the raisins.)

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan. Melt shortening in a saucepan. Remove from heat. Mix in sugar, eggs, and vanilla. Add flour, baking powder, and raisins, if using. Spread batter in pan and bake for 30 minutes. Cool slightly and cut into squares.

I'm sure these would be good with frosting or chocolate chips instead of raisins, but we do like them plain.

  1. *snort snort* Brownies and Whiteys. I looove old cookbooks. All the recipes are just straight up stuff we keep in the pantry. Plus they weren't all affiliated brainwashers saying 6 oz. PHILADELPHIA cream cheese or 2 cups KRAFT cheese. Let me choose my own ingredients thankyouverymuch!

This is now on my mental "to make list."

Totally unrelated but my captcha is "typerea." Is that like diarrhea of the keyboard?

  2. Looks yummy! I think these are also called "blondies."

  3. Actually, these come out much whiter than blondies because of the shortening and white sugar instead of butter and brown sugar. :)

  4. crazy old cookbooks! I think we'll give these a try-

  5. Those whiteys look tasty! Huh. That does sound weird.

  6. We can always count on Scott to keep it real :)

  7. My husband would be so psyched if I could get the grocery bill down to feed the family on $16/week. Glad you're feeling better!

  8. love your blog name. I will for sure stop by to check out your yummy goodness again.

  9. Hi! I miss you. Hope all is well.
