Beer Bread

Yeah, so didn't I mention beer bread? Remember how this recipe was like an urban legend a few years ago? "All you need is flour and beer, man..."

Beer Bread
3 cups self-rising flour
3 tablespoons sugar
12 ounces of beer

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a loaf pan with cooking spray. Mix all the ingredients together. Pour into the loaf pan and bake for an hour.

You can also mix in herbs or sesame seeds or whatever you want.

It looks as if the make-your-own self-rising flour measurements are 1 cup flour + 1 teaspoon baking powder + 1/2 teaspoon salt = 1 cup self-rising flour. I'm going to try to make my own self-rising whole wheat flour and see how it turns out.

Since the Rolling Rock buyout, I've changed my Pennsylvania beer allegiance to Yuengling. When I made the bread this weekend, I used Yuengling Black & Tan, which gave it an enjoyably bitter beer flavor.

  1. So, it was good? Did the kids like it? Did you buy self-rising flour at the store? Definitely sounds like a recipe to try!

  2. Yes, it's a good recipe. The kids liked it toasted with margarine. I think they would have liked it plain if I'd used a lighter-flavored beer. I did use store-bought self-rising flour, but I'm interested in making my own so I can add some whole wheat or spelt flour to it.

  3. Mmmm, my two favorite carbs: beer, and bread, magically become one!
And I like my word verification tonight - "fzerk!"

  4. Please use "fzerk" in a sentence:
    "I'm going completely fzerk!"

That's right up there with "pinehole" on my list of favorite blog words.

  5. I think "fzerk" is also a good sound word, like "I plugged in the light, and it went fzerk and burned out." But I could use "I'm going completely fzerk!" too. I like it - sounds like something Ben would say.

  7. I think it's a real word now!

A non-cooking med student friend of mine told me about it years ago, then I saw it in a magazine shortly after that. Having beer in the house made me think about it again, so I looked it up online. Ah, what would we do without the Internet?

  8. Speaking of the internet, I have been meaning to ask you if you get the USFIS food safety updates? I signed up, just out of curiosity, a few years ago. It seems like most of the food recalls are due to undisclosed allergens (usually DAIRY) in processed foods. Here's a link:

  9. Thank you, Becky! I keep meaning to sign up for that, and I keep forgetting. I do get updates from FAAN, but it's good to get them from as many sources as possible.
